7 Trial-Close Questions That Tell You Where the Deal Stands

October 30, 2026 · 3 MIN READ · THE DRILLO TEAM

A trial close checks alignment along the way rather than at the end. Saving every agreement for the final ask makes that ask feel like a leap. A buyer who says "yes" to several small points finds the close to be the next natural step. If a buyer says "no" to a trial close, you find a gap before it becomes a wall. Here are seven questions to ask along the way, in the order you would use them.

1. Ask if this is the result they want

A trial close is a small question you ask along the way to check alignment. Ask them early and often. They make the final ask feel like a confirmation instead of a confrontation.

2. Ask if the direction feels right

A trial close checks the direction of the plan as you go. A "no" here shows a gap you can fix before it becomes a wall at the end. You ask this to get a small "yes" during the conversation.

3. Tie it back to their own words

A trial close checks your plan against what the buyer told you earlier. Say it out loud so they hear their own reasons attached to your plan. Small agreements throughout the conversation make the final ask feel like a natural step.

How does that track with what you told me earlier?

4. Ask for a number, one to ten

Ask for a number when you sense hesitation but cannot name it. A score below nine means there is a concern the buyer has not said. This turns a vague feeling into a specific problem you can work on.

On a scale of one to ten, how ready do you feel to start today?

5. Ask what would move the number up

The follow-up to a scale question makes it work. Their answer names the real concern you were about to guess at. You address the actual problem instead of an imagined one.

What would move that up to a ten?

6. Ask why this is a right-now thing

A buyer might want a new car but still drift because wanting something someday costs nothing. Get them to say out loud why this is a today thing and not a someday thing. This question makes them argue for action instead of delay. Their words are worth more than your pitch. Use their answer as the close at the end.

7. Ask how hard they'll work, not whether they'll buy

Ask how ready they are to do the work right before you present the plan. This flip separates their commitment to your service from their commitment to the effort. If a buyer says "eight" because of price, you can surface the real issue. Almost everyone says ten, because nobody wants to promise their own goal a mediocre effort.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

I'm not asking whether you're ready to commit to me, I'm asking: if I hand you the plan, do you follow it at an eight, or at a ten?

The honest version is the one that works

The manipulative version stacks small agreements so you can claim they already agreed to everything. This wins once but makes the buyer feel handled. The honest version asks because you want the answer, which is why a "no" to a trial close is the most useful thing you can hear: it finds the gap before it becomes a wall.

Say it before you need it

These questions are easy to read and they still do not come out in a live conversation, because mid-pitch you are thinking about what you say next, not what you ask. Said out loud a few times, they start showing up on their own.
