"Call Me Back in Six Months": 6 Things to Say

November 2, 2026 · 3 MIN READ · THE DRILLO TEAM

The conversation went well until they mentioned timing. They might have a real constraint like a budget cycle or a current project. They might just be giving you a polite delay that keeps getting pushed. Accepting six months at face value leads to a calendar reminder that becomes a cold call into the void.

Here are six things to say instead.

1. Ask what changes in six months

A specific event like a budget renewal in March is a real constraint. Your job is to tell the difference between a real cycle and a polite way to end the call. Ask what changes for them at that time.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

That's fair. What's happening in six months that makes that a better time?

2. Separate the timing from the bandwidth

A real cycle and "I'm just slammed right now" are two different problems. The two have different answers, and it matters which one is in front of you. Ask them to clarify why they want to wait until next quarter.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

I want to respect that. Is there a specific reason for the timing, or is it more about bandwidth right now?

3. Ask what would need to be different

Ask what would need to be different by the later date. This finds the condition behind the delay instead of just a date on the calendar. You can handle some of these issues while you are still in the room.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

If we talked again in March, what would need to be different for this to make sense?

4. Let them argue for doing it now

A buyer can want a result and feel a problem but still drift because wanting something someday costs nothing. You gently argue for the delay so they must argue for action. Their reasons in their own voice are worth ten of yours at the decision point.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

Can I ask, what's making this a right-now thing for you? Why not just keep kicking it down the road for another year?

5. Put a calendar on the delay

A horizon question gives the delay a shape. It is not pressure, it is a calendar, and calendars are honest. Let the buyer picture themselves standing at the end of the wait.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

Think about the end of this year. Do you want to look back and see the moment you finally started, or see the same year on repeat?

6. Ask what plan B is

Ask what happens if they do not start this program today. A sincere question helps them realize that staying where they are has a cost. They will often admit out loud that they have no other plan for their goals.

SAY IT LIKE THIS

Totally fine if today's a "no". What's plan B for the goal, though?

The honest version is the one that works

Fake deadlines work once before the buyer sees that slot still open in three weeks. They stop trusting your word. Share a fact about your schedule instead of a manufactured rush: two evening slots left this month is information the buyer deserves, and pushing to close over a constraint that was real only costs you the goodwill.

Say it before you need it

The words "no problem, I'll check back in six months" come out on autopilot to fill an awkward beat. The six lines above only come out that fast if they have already been said out loud somewhere else first.
